Midrange

New Kings
This 30-year-old property could do with some updating. Still, its low rates and interesting location near the jade and night markets and a Tin Hau temple make it recommendable. Otherwise, it doesn't have any facilities, its tiny rooms are rather plain and dark, and the tiled bathrooms lack counter space. This is a good choice only for budget travelers on the go, since you probably wouldn't want to spend much time here anyway. From US$71

Booth Lodge
It has a comfortable lobby and an adjacent coffee shop offering very reasonably priced lunch and dinner buffets with Chinese, Japanese, and Western selections, but best is the restaurant's outdoor brick terrace overlooking a wooded hillside, where buffet barbecues are held in peak season. Rooms are all twins or doubles and either standard rooms or larger deluxe. From US$ 81 onwards

Ibis North Point The 'Harbour View' rooms have some spectacular vistas of water and faraway, cloud-shrouded peaks, though your eyes do initially have to stretch out over a car park and a ferry terminal. It also has a concrete-floored 2nd floor cafe that gets too noisy to be enjoyable. If you don't mind being removed from the action, because of its poor location, the Ibis is a worthy budget option. From US$55 onwards.

Charter House The Charterhouse's rooms have an appealing traditional look involving lots of wood and brass - a style the it calls 'neoclassical' - though they tend to be on the compact side. Facilities in each room include in-house movies and marble bathrooms. The 'Junior Suites' have a separate living room and bedroom and are dressed in a more contemporary neutral style. From US$77

Rosedale on the Park
The view at night is quite pretty, although the nearby apartment blocks are a bit run-down. The staff at the reception counter is helpful and speaks rather good English. The rooms itself are rather small but with adequate space for storage, luggage and extra shopping. From US$ 80-120
